In Japan, in the Nara period (around 752), the Great Buddha of Todaiji Temple was gold-plated using a method called the * amalgam method.

The "Amalgam method" is one of the long-established plating methods for gold plating copper.

1. When gold is dissolved in mercury, the gold color disappears and it becomes the silver color of mercury.

2. Dissolve gold in mercury and apply liquid to the Buddha statue made of copper.

3. Heat to remove only mercury

4. Finally, only gold remains and "gold plating" is completed.
